What is a Professional Services Engineer? What is a Professional Services Consultant?

A Professional Services Engineer (or Consultant) works in a company’s Professional Services department, instead of the Engineering/R&D department. The distinction between these departments is that Engineering/R&D is typically considered a cost center, while Professional Services is typically considered a profit center (where customers are charged on a project basis or by billable hours).

The activities performed by a Professional Services Engineer (or Consultant) are similar to the activities performed by a Solutions Engineer, Implementation Engineer, Integration Engineer, or Technical Support Engineer in the Engineering/R&D organization.
